{overflow} Overflow Property | CSS: Presentation Layer

Standards Based Development

overflow specifies whether to clip content, render scroll bars, or display overflow content of a block-level element.

Setting overflow to anything other than visible (default) creates a new block formatting context.

overflow Values

overflow:visible

Default; Content is not clipped, and may be rendered outside the content box.

overflow:hidden

Content is clipped and no scrollbars are provided.

overflow:scroll

Content is clipped and desktop browsers use scrollbars, whether or not any content is clipped. By doing so avoids any problem with scrollbars appearing/disappearing in a dynamic environment. Printers may print overflowing content.

overflow:auto

Varies with user agent. Firefox provides scrollbars if content overflows.
