Folder and File Names

When you save a document as a Web page, all supporting files, such as bullets, background textures, and graphics, are by default organized in a folder within the folder where the parent Web page is stored. By default, the name of the supporting folder is the name of the Web page plus an underscore (_), a period (.), or a hyphen (-) and the word "files." The word "files" will appear in the language version of the Microsoft Office application that you used to save the file as a Web page.

For example, suppose you use the Dutch language version of Microsoft Excel to save a file called Page1 as a Web page. The default name of the supporting folder would be Page1_bestanden.

If you save the Web page with a short file name (maximum of eight characters, plus a 3-character file extension), the supporting folder is the name of the Web page without the word "files."

The following table shows the translation for "files" in each language version.

Spaces should not be used in file names. When supporting files are renamed and subsequently opened and saved in an Office application, the name of the file is set to the default name specified by the application. If a file of the same name exists, it is written over with the new file.

In Office generally, if long file names are used and the supporting files are saved to the same folder as the main Web page, the supporting file names contain the name of the document or workbook and an underscore followed by the name. In Microsoft PowerPoint, the name of the presentation, an underscore, the character "s", the slide index number, and an underscore precede the file name. For example, MyPresentation_s0001_image001.gif contains the first GIF image on the first slide in MyPresentation.

If 8.3 file names are used and the index number exceeds the number of digits specified in the previous table, the string preceeding the number is truncated by the number. For example, movie 1000 in a document is named movi1000.htm.

In Microsoft Excel, new items can be published to an existing Web page. The name of the workbook, an underscore, the item index, and an underscore precede the file name of a supporting file for the new item. For example, Book1_5_image001.gif contains the first GIF image in item 5.
