Roadway Symbology Extension. The extension allows the user to label road segments by reading two field values from the active theme. One field represents the road classification and one field represents the road number. The program does look for defaults. They are: ROAD_CLASS = Road classification value ROAD_NUM = Road designation If these fields are not found then the program will request the fields from the user. Different road symbols are displayed based on the following road classifications: Value Road Class Symbol =============================== 1 Interstate shield 2 Federal Highway shield 3 State Highway square 4 County Roads circle 5 ? Diamond 6 ? Triangle 7 ? Pentagon 8 ? Octagon The road numbers are then read from the ROAD_NUM field and placed in the center of the symbol. These road numbers can contain alpha-numerics but must be 3 characters or less in length. The application adds two new buttons and one new tool in the view document interface The buttons do the following: a) Batch symbol processing for segments in the active theme. You will be asked to enter a minimum line length to symbolize. This helps weed out short segments that don't need to be symbolized. All lines longer than the input length will be symbolized at the center of the line. b) Initialize the symbol fields and the symbol size. Use this option to specify fields and to specify symbol size. Symbol size is specified in points (72 per inch) and scaled to a particular map scale. Thus, if you are printing a map at 1:24,000 scale and you want the symbols to be 1/10 of an inch you would set the font size to 7.2 (72/10) at 1:24,000 scale. Each symbol added is attached to the active theme which should be a line theme that represents roads of some kind. The tool added is an interactive symbol placement tool. You should see it as the right-most tool in the toolbar. Just press the tool and select the line you want to symbolize and the road_class value will be read and the appropriate symbol placed at that point with the road designation from the road_num field. You will need to load the font (roadsym.ttf) using the Font manager for your specific version of windows. Known Problems 1) For some reason the symbols are not persistent. That is, after you place some symbols and you save the project and exit ArcView, the next time you open the project the symbols are not right. To fix this you can select all the graphics and then use the symbol palette to change the font to the DNR Roadway Symbols font. Once you do that the symbols are persistent and stay the way you expect them to. 2) This application does not function on the UNIX version of ArcView.
