Sub-Pixel Fonts
ie9 introduced sub-pixel ClearType font positioning as part of its hardware-accelerated rendering of html5 content.
Note: ClearType font rendering is used in all ie9 document modes; sub-pixel positioning is used only in ie9's default standards mode; ie9's compatibility modes - Quirks, 7, and 8 use whole-pixel text metrics.
Whole-pixel metrics rounds to the nearest pixel, so if you're in ie8 and you set font-size:10pt you actually will get font-size:13px, even though mathematically the conversion of points to pixels yields font-size:13.333px.
Using sub-pixel fonts, text in web documents will lay out the same across different display resolutions and zoom factors.
