Faculty Preparation: Summer Faculty Immersion Project
The Earth System Science Community Curriculum Testbed
The ECOlogic management team will introduce participating faculty to the curriculum through immersion in July-August of each year at Gonzaga College High School, beginning in August 1994. Like the larger curriculum development program, faculty, students and ECOlogic staff will work collaboratively in teams to investigate and evaluate the process of ESS curriculum implementation and community curriculum development. Following a brief introduction to the curriculum, four participating secondary school faculty, two university professors and four Gonzaga students will be divided into two teams of five (two faculty, one professor and two students) and begin their investigations.
One week will be devoted to project evaluation, strategies and techniques for faculty and students, curriculum evaluation, experiments for interschool collaboration and support, and planning and scheduling for the next year. Through a process of heuristic learning, dialogue and peer education, faculty will learn the curriculum, culture, method, tools, resources, responsibilities and goals of each member of the community. Teachers will learn basic UNIX commands, how to use the graphical user interface, and how to involve their students in the configuration and application of this enhanced graphics processor for data visualization and Internet services, such as WWW.
